Automotive Zippos
While the U.S. Automobile market was dominated by The Big Three for most of the 20th Century, there were many automobile manufacturers and brands in the early years which have since disappeared. However, many European automobile manufacturers have long and distinguished histories which continue to this day.. Japanese manufacturers entered the international markets after World War II.
1950 Zippo with a Studebaker logo. Clem and Henry Studebaker started a blacksmith shop in 1852 and supplied wagons to the U.S. Army during the Civil War. It became the world's leading wagon maker and moved into making gasoline powered wagons in the early 1900's. Studebaker went on became a leading automobile manufacturer until it went out of business in 1966. 1965 Zippo advertising the Marlin by Rambler. The Marlin was produced by the American Motor Corporation from 1965 to 1967. 1968 slim Zippo advertising Volkswagen Morgan Motors, Inc. Route 220 North, Martinsville, Virginia is engraved with the famous VW Beetle. 1966 Zippo advertising Volkswagen, or "The People's Car". Its origin traces back to pre-WWII Germany when Ferdinand Porsche and Adolf Hitler envisioned an affordable car for everyone. 1978 Zippo with the Porsche logo. The first Porsche was produced in 1948. 1994 Mercedes Benz Zippo. The Company resulted from the 1926 merger of Gottlieb Daimler's Daimler Motor Company and Benz & Company, both founded in 1890. 1977 Zippo with the Ferrari emblem. The history of Ferrari and the emblem can be found HERE. 1962 Zippo advertising a SAAB. The Swedish SAAB (Svenska Aerofabrik Aktiebolaget) automobile was first produced in 1947. 1937-40 Zippo advertising Continental Red Seal Engines, Detroit, Michigan. Continental Red Seal engines were introduced in Durant automobiles in 1928. Continental also built tractor and aircraft engines.
1948 Zippo with the Hudson Motor Car logo, advertising The Henley-Kimball Co . Hudson began producing cars in 1909 and was merged into the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation in 1953.
1983 Fiat Zippo. Fiat was founded in Turin, Italy in 1899.
1948 Zippo advertising Approved Packard Service by Packard Louisville Motor Co. in Louisville, Kentucky. The Packard Company was started in 1898 by James Wood Packard and became a leading luxury car manufacturer by the 1930's. By the 1950's, the competition by the Big Three had become too fierce and Packard was merged into the Studebaker Company. 1980 slim Datsun Zippo. Datsun, produced by Nissan Motor Company traces its origins back to 1911. The name comes from the "Son of DAT" after the Japanese "Datto", or running hare. |
